Unser Körper ist an Haut, Darm und Atemwegen mit einer dünnen Schutzschicht bedeckt, den sogenannten Epithelbarrieren. Diese Barrieren halten schädliche Stoffe wie Bakterien, Viren, Schadstoffe und Allergene draussen und verhindern, dass sie in den Körper eindringen. Sind diese Schutzschichten beschädigt oder «undicht», können Krankheitserreger leichter eindringen und Entzündungen auslösen. Das kann zu Allergien, Asthma, chronischen Darmerkrankungen und sogar Autoimmunerkrankungen führen.

Wissenschaft lebt vom Austausch. Wer Erkenntnisse gewinnt, trägt Verantwortung, sie zu teilen – denn Wissenschaft ist für alle da. Soziale Medien sind dabei ein wertvolles Werkzeug, wenn sie klug genutzt werden. David Niederseer von der Hochgebirgsklinik Davos erklärt im Bündner Tagblatt vom 19. Mai 2025 ihre Strategie: einheitliche Formate, einfache Sprache, Visualisierung. Die grösste Herausforderung in sozialen Medien ist es, Fakten ansprechend zu präsentieren, ohne sie zu stark zu vereinfachen oder gar zu verzerren.

Christoph Marty war an einem Donnerstagmorgen im März auf dem Weg zum Versuchsfeld Weissfluhjoch des WSLInstituts für Schnee- und Lawinenforschung SLF, rund 150 Höhenmeter unterhalb der Bergstation der Standseilbahn Parsenn. Marty ist Schneeklimatologe am SLF und Experte für die langfristige Entwicklung von Schneehöhen. Am Versuchsfeld erhebt er regelmässig wichtige Daten für seine Arbeit – und für die seiner Kollegen.

Cezmi Akdis schreibt in unserer Kolumne im Bündner Tagblatt, dass viele chronische Krankheiten – von Asthma bis Alzheimer – auf eine unsichtbare Schwachstelle im Körper zurückgehen: geschädigte Schleimhäute. Am Schweizerischen Institut für Allergie- und Asthmaforschung untersucht er, wie Umweltgifte unsere inneren Schutzbarrieren zerstören und dadurch eine stille Gesundheitskrise auslösen. Realistic drug testing with heart-on-a-chip

Cardiovascular diseases are the leading cause of death in Europe and incur high costs. To advance research, suitable models are needed to realistically test the effects of new drugs. This is where the EU research project EMAPS comes in. The goal of the eight project partners is to develop an artificial “heart-on-a-chip” that can accurately replicate both healthy and diseased heart tissue. The approach aims not only to accelerate drug development but also to largely eliminate the need for animal testing.

Injuries and diseases affecting cartilage and intervertebral discs present major challenges for medicine, as these tissues have very limited self-healing capabilities. That is why researchers in Davos are working intensively on effective therapeutic approaches. A key role in this research is played by bioreactors, which allow scientists to simulate cell behavior under realistic conditions.

Herz-Kreislauf-Erkrankungen gehören zu den häufigsten Todesursachen weltweit. At the Institute for Data Analysis, Artificial Intelligence, Visualization and Simulation (DAViS) at the University of Applied Sciences of the Grisons, research, services, teaching and continuing education go hand in hand. Within a short space of time, DAViS has developed from a research and service center into an independent institute and is celebrating its first birthday this January.

Parasiteninfektionen sind weltweit ein grosses Gesundheitsproblem. Sie können verschiedene Organe befallen und eine Vielzahl von Symptomen auslösen. Solche Infektionen können zu Mangelernährung führen, die Wirkung von Impfungen schwächen und scheinen Einfluss auf Asthma und Allergien zu haben. Ascaris lumbricoides (Spulwurm) ist weltweit einer der häufigsten Parasiten. Am SIAF in Davos wird weiterhin erforscht, wie das Immunsystem bei Allergien und Würmern reagiert.

Nikolaus Kramm, a resident physician at Kliniken Valens, wanted to find out whether the recommendation for partial weight-bearing after hip fractures actually offers any advantages - since guidelines often suggest immediate full weight-bearing in uncomplicated cases. Using anonymized rehabilitation data, he compared mobility and independence between patients following partial and full weight-bearing protocols.

Pascal Kaufmann präsentierte letzten Monat als Schweizer Premiere im Hallenstadion in Zürich den humanoiden Roboter G1 von Unitree, einem chinesischen Start-up. Allerdings hat der Roboter grosse Mankos: mangelnde Autonomie, fehlende Lernfähigkeit und beschränkte Sensorik. Mit KI aus dem Lab42 soll er jedoch haushaltstauglich gemacht werden. Die Vision dabei ist die Renaissance 2.0, auch «Bellaissance» genannt, eine neue Epoche quasi, in welcher Roboter den Menschen durch das Erledigen von Arbeiten Zeit für die wirklich wichtigen Anliegen freispielen.

Das Jahr 2024 war das wärmste seit Beginn der Wetteraufzeichnungen und brachte verheerende Unwetter mit sich, die auch Graubünden schwer trafen. Im Schweizerischen Nationalpark werden seit fast 40 Jahren Murgänge untersucht, um die Auswirkungen des Klimawandels auf solche Naturgefahren besser zu verstehen und die Sicherheit der Bevölkerung zu erhöhen.

The menstrual cycle affects the female body in many ways - including in sports, as numerous studies have shown. Based on these findings, the sports science research team from SRISM and Davos Sports & Health launched a study with the HCD Ladies. The goal was to determine whether cycle-based training could improve the players' performance and well-being.

Derzeit befindet sich ein klinisches Forschungsprojekt in der Clinica Holistica Engiadina in der Abschlussphase. Im Rahmen des HARMODI-Projekts wird untersucht, ob die Herzratenvariabilität – also die Variation des Zeitabstands zwischen aufeinanderfolgenden Herzschlägen in Millisekunden - ein verlässlicher Indikator für die Messung des Schweregrads von Depression und Erschöpfung ist, um die Behandlung von Burnout zu optimieren.

Modern life has brought many conveniences - but also more than 350,000 new chemicals. These substances are found in many everyday products such as cleaning agents, cosmetics, and food. They are often used without considering their potential health effects. Pets are also exposed to the same environmental burdens and come into contact with pollutants from cleaning agents, microplastics, and exhaust fumes just as frequently as humans.

“Research is fun,” says Laura Mecchi, a PhD student at the AO Research Institute in Davos, with enthusiasm. Mecchi is in her third year of a project investigating how damaged cartilage tissue can regenerate itself. “One of the best moments is when a study is successfully completed, and you get the answers to the questions you previously posed.” However, research usually progresses in very small steps and can take years or even decades before the results are visible in patients.

"Graubünden forscht" showcases the diverse research areas represented in Graubünden. Young researchers from our member and partner institutions, as well as from invited institutions across the Alpine region, will present their research projects.

As an Instrumental Scientist in PMOD’s Solar Physics group, Krzysztof Barczynski works on the ESA-NASA mission “Solar Orbiter”. This space mission aims to explore the mysteries of the Sun and gain a better understanding of its dynamic processes.

Julien Bota, along with other researchers, is studying how herbivorous insects, snails, and fungal pathogens impact the plant communities on three sites at Jakobshorn. "We know a lot about large herbivores like marmots and red deer, but the influence of insects, snails, and fungal diseases is still largely unexplored," Bota explains.

CK-CARE stellt seine Bio- und Datenbanken ins Zentrum seiner Forschungsaktivitäten. Samantha Paoletti und Gilles Weder, Forschungs-Co-Leitende und Wegbereiter für die Zukunft der Frauen-Gesundheitstechnologie am CSEM in Landquart wollen mit FemTech den Weg für verbesserte medizinische Ergebnisse und eine bessere Lebensqualität für Frauen erzielen. Mit zunehmendem Bewusstsein und steigenden Investitionen können immer mehr personalisierte und präzise Gesundheitslösungen erwartet werden. Die Arbeit von Unternehmen wie CSEM ist entscheidend, um diesen Wandel und innovative Lösungen voranzutreiben.

Angelica Blumenthal is a research assistant at the Institut dal Dicziunari Rumantsch Grischun (I-DRG) in Chur. For her dissertation, she investigates with detective-like intuition the journey of international words from their source language into Bündnerromanisch.

The Earth is frequently irradiated by protons generated during explosive events on the Sun. This phenomenon is well-studied and does not pose a significant danger to the Earth's ozone layer. However, historical records indicate that every few thousand years, an extremely explosive event occurs. Could such a phenomenon seriously damage the ozone layer and cause ultraviolet radiation at the Earth's surface to rise to dangerous levels?

Barbara Haller Rupf nahm kürzlich am internationalen Kongress des Netzwerks «Scholars at Risk» (SAR) in Vilnius teil. In der Forschungskolumne im Bündner Tagblatt teilt sie ihre Eindrücke. Das Netzwerk SAR wurde 2000 gegründet und ist in New York angesiedelt. SAR setzt sich für den Schutz der akademischen Freiheit ein und unterstützt bedrohte Wissenschaftlerinnen und Wissenschaftler.

The cross-institutional project "Shaping Culture" is currently being developed at the Swiss Institute for Information Science at the University of Applied Sciences of the Grisons. Project leader and educational researcher Vera Husfeldt explains the project idea: "We want to demonstrate how the combination of digital technologies and artistic involvement of the public can preserve and make cultural heritage accessible. In a first step, this will be illustrated using the example of the Giacometti family of artists from Stampa."

Sechs Tage früher als 1998, am 14. Juni statt am 20. Juni, beginnen in den höheren Lagen der Alpen die Pflanzen im Durchschnitt zu wachsen. Michael Zehnder, Biologe am SLF, erklärt das mit dem Klimawandel und den stark steigenden Durchschnittstemperaturen in der Bergregion. Auch die Wachstumsrate und der Punkt des maximalen Wachstums haben sich durch den wärmeren Bergfrühling in den vergangenen drei Jahrzehnten verändert. Untersucht hat er das mit Hilfe der Wetterstationen des Interkantonalen Mess- und Informationssystems IMIS.

Wissenschaftler aus der ganzen Welt – darunter ein Team des Physikalisch-Meteorologischen Observatoriums Davos (PMOD) – haben sich kürzlich in San Antonio (USA) getroffen, um aktuelle Fortschritte in der Sonnenphysik zu diskutieren. Auf astronomischen Skalen ist die Sonne mit einem Abstand von «nur» 150 Millionen Kilometern sehr nah an der Erde und daher der bei weitem am besten untersuchte Stern. Jedoch sind wir noch weit davon entfernt, ihre Funktionsweise im Detail zu verstehen.

Significant progress has been made in recent decades, particularly in the field of minimally invasive techniques for stabilizing the pelvis. Pelvic fractures in older adults are second only to those in their second and third decades of life, predominantly affecting people around the age of 70. The KSGR (Kantonsspital Graubünden) investigated the suitability of a specific minimally invasive technique for patients over the age of 65.

Asthma und Allergien können das tägliche Leben von Personen, die an diesen Krankheiten leiden, überschatten und routinemässige Aufgaben wie auch Hobbys zu Herausforderungen machen. Die ständige Möglichkeit eines Asthmaanfalls oder einer allergischen Reaktion auf ganz gewöhnliche Substanzen diktiert alle Entscheidungen im Alltag, während zudem Atemwegsviren wie Schnupfen (Rhinovirus), COVID-19 (SARS-CoV-2) oder Umweltverschmutzung eine weitere Bedrohung darstellen.

Wiebke Turner from the Clinica Holistica Engiadina presents the HARMODI project, a study aimed at optimizing burnout treatment, in the Bündner Woche. The doctoral candidate aims to investigate whether heart rate variability (HRV) is suitable for measuring the severity of depression and exhaustion. Another focus of the study is to examine how HRV, exhaustion, and the fitness level of patients change during the stationary 6- to 8-week therapy.

Bergdestinationen stehen vor der Herausforderung, ihre Gemeinden das ganze Jahr über zu beleben. «Community Building» kann saisonale Schwankungen ausgleichen und Tourismus- sowie Lebensraum verbinden. Einige Destinationen arbeiten bereits am Aufbau von Communities. Bisher liegen jedoch noch wenige Erkenntnisse vor, wie Destinationen Communities gezielt aufbauen und zu ihrer Belebung nutzen können. Lena Pescia von der FHGR stellt in der Kolumne im Bündner Tagblatt ein von Innotour (SECO) gefördertes Projekt von Bregaglia Engadin Turismo, Andermatt Swiss Alps AG und der Fachhochschule Graubünden (Mitglied der Academia Raetica) vor.

“The heart is the most magnificent organ there is!” David Niederseer was already convinced of this when he first examined the anatomy of the heart more closely during the dissection course at the beginning of his medical studies. Since the summer of 2023, the sports cardiologist and researcher has been driving the expansion of cardiovascular research and sports cardiology at the Hochgebirgsklinik Davos. The cardiology team at the Hochgebirgsklinik Davos, under the leadership of Jan Vontobel, aims not only to set new standards in clinical care but also to further strengthen research in this field. T

David Schmid, Leiter Regional Development & Relations am CSEM, erläutert wie die Forschung auch in Graubünden dazu beitragen kann, dass Graubünden in den nächsten Jahrzehnten CO₂-neutral unterwegs sei könnte. Zu diesem Thema findet auch das Wissenschaftscafé Graubünden am 16. Mai um 18.30 Uhr in die Bibliothek Landquart statt.

Häufig hängt der Erfolg einer orthopädischen und unfallchirurgischen Behandlung von Knochenbrüchen mit den Fähigkeiten und dem Ausbildungsstand der operierenden Chirurgen/-innen zusammen. Um die oftmals komplexen operativen Aufgaben ausreichend und vollumfänglich lernen und trainieren zu können, wurden neue innovative Lösungen am AO Forschungsinstitut Davos (ARI) entwickelt.

“Generative AI has so far lacked a connection to the real world. We need to give AI a physical presence. The vision is to develop a curious robot that, like a small child, is able to recognize and learn connections on its own in a constantly changing world. Humans are able to draw meaningful conclusions from a small amount of data and observations. AI has hardly been able to do this so far.”

Andri Perl thematisiert die Verbindung zwischen der Forschung und dem Theater am Beispiel «Sonnensturm» in unserer monatlichen Kolumne im Bündner Tagblatt. Seine Theatergruppe Nucleus und er waren derart von Sonnenstürmen fasziniert, dass sie mehr darüber erfahren wollten. Ein Besuch des Physikalisch-Meteorologischen Observatoriums Davos (PMOD) schürte die Begeisterung und diente als Inspirationsquelle.

The SnowImager measures snowpack structure. Members of the avalanche warning service still undertake the time-consuming work of establishing the characteristics of the snowpack manually. The SnowImager is intended to significantly speed up the process and make it objective.

Since 2019, Yasutaka Mitamura has dedicated himself to researching skin diseases at the Swiss Institute of Allergy and Asthma Research (SIAF) in Davos. Mitamura’s research interests focus in particular on atopic dermatitis, also known as neurodermatitis. Last year, Mitamura presented new research findings on the molecular and genetic causes of atopic dermatitis together with researchers from the SIAF and renowned institutions from Switzerland, Germany and the USA.

It all started with a single cell. The cell that is the beginning of you, me, your pet, the dinosaurs and ultimately all living creatures on earth. But how does a cell know what it should do and what it should be? The information is mainly found in the genetic material that we possess in the form of deoxyribonucleic acid - DNA for short. This is the main instruction manual that, like a recipe book, determines what a cell will do and how it will interact with the surrounding cells.

Klarspüler aus gewerblichen Geschirrspülern führt zur Schädigung des Darmepithels. Mitarbeitende des Schweizerischen Instituts für Allergie- und Asthmaforschung (SIAF) in Davos, das mit der Universität Zürich assoziiert ist, haben bei ihren Untersuchungen festgestellt, dass nach einem Waschgang in professionellen Geschirrspülmaschinen ein Rückstand des Klarspülers auf dem Geschirr verbleibt. Diese Chemikalien können das Darmepithel schädigen und zur Entstehung von chronischen Krankheiten beitragen.

Im Herbst 2023 feierten gleich zwei bedeutende Bildungsinstitutionen der Bündner Wissenschaftslandschaft einen runden Geburtstag: die Fachhochschule Graubünden wurde 60 Jahre alt – etabliert, aber immer noch sehr frisch – und die Pädagogische Hochschule ist mit ihren 20 Jahren mehr als volljährig. Beiden Bündner Hochschulen sei noch einmal gratuliert zum runden Geburtstag – etwas verspätet zwar, jedoch nicht minder herzlich!

Die Forschung im SRISM widmet sich brennenden Fragen der Sportimmunologie: Warum sind Spitzenathleten anfälliger für Infekte, Entzündungen, Allergien und Asthma, während sportliche Aktivitäten die Freizeitathleten vor Infektionen und Asthma zu schützen scheinen? Gibt es messbare Charakteristika, mit denen besonders anfällige Personen identifiziert und diese anschliessend besser geschützt werden können? Welchen Einfluss hat intensiver bzw. moderater Sport auf das menschliche Immunsystem und den Stoffwechsel?

From a scientific point of view, it is now undisputed that we humans are contributing significantly to the ongoing warming. Nevertheless, there are still knowledge gaps and uncertainties in the field of climate research. For example, the effects of aerosols on climate are not yet fully understood. Aerosols are solid and liquid particles suspended in the air that come in a variety of sizes. Environmental physicist Stelios Kazadzis of the Davos Physical Meteorological Observatory/World Radiation Center (PMOD/WRC) reports how the internationally recognized research institute is helping improve our understanding of the effects of aerosols on climate.

In her doctoral thesis, Julia Paterno from the Swiss National Park is investigating how natural and man-made influences, especially noise, affect the singing behavior of songbirds in mountain forests.

Die Anwendung künstlicher Intelligenz (KI) wirft viele Fragen und Ängste auf. Stefan Engler erinnert das Hin- und Hergerissen-Sein zwischen Faszination und Ohnmacht an Johann Wolfgang von Goethes Ballade vom «Zauberlehrling» des Jahres 1797. Auch dort gerät das Geschehen ausser Kontrolle.

Her experience at a small animal clinic in England sparked veterinarian Esther Wehrle’s interest in bone healing research: “I was interested in why some developed healing problems and others did not.” Since April 2022, she has been head of bone biology at the AO Research Institute (ARI) in Davos, which offers an optimal environment for this interdisciplinary and translational research. Wehrle uses animal models to research bone healing in animals and humans, with a particular focus on mechanics and molecular and immune biology.

Kendra Wernlé’s passion for biology and space developed at an early age when she watched the American TV science program “Cosmos”. At the University of Zurich, the American-born scientist can combine her passion for both fields of research. Wernlé is part of the team of the research group “Gravitational Biology” led by UZH Space Hub director Oliver Ullrich and scientific department head Cora Thiel. The research group is primarily interested in how weightlessness affects cells of the human immune system and how altered gravity affects genes.

Since its beginnings 65 years ago, the AO Foundation has been dedicated to the treatment of bone fractures. The Fracture Monitor, a new smart implant developed at the AO Research Institute Davos, aims to enable individualized follow-up treatment by objectively recording the bone healing process.

Anne Kempel is researching biodiversity on the Jakobshorn - more precisely, the plants and their enemies. The topic of biodiversity is currently on many people's minds. It is particularly pronounced here. "We want to understand how this meadow works and how it will react to climate change," says the biologist.

Ruedi Haller, Direktor des Schweizerischen Nationalparks beleuchtet in der Forschungskolumne im Bündner Tagblatt, welche Bedeutung die Forschung im Nationalpark hat und zu welchen Themen geforscht wird.

Jessica Munch, a geophysicist at the WSL Institute for Snow and Avalanche Research SLF in Davos, studies the behavior of ice-rock avalanches in the European Alps, but also in Kyrgyzstan or India. Although such avalanches are not as common as snow avalanches, their impact can be significant.

Es gibt viele unbeantwortete Fragen zu COVID-19, zum Beispiel wie und weshalb es zu schweren Verläufen und Langzeit-Symptomen kommt und wie man diese am besten behandelt. Diese Fragen beschäftigen unser Team von Forschenden und Klinikerinnen und Klinikern an der HGK und am Christine Kühne – Center for Allergy Research and Education (CK-CARE). Unser Ziel ist es, zu einem besseren Verständnis der Rekonvaleszenzphase nach COVID-19 beizutragen, um schlussendlich eine bessere Behandlung unserer Patienten zu ermöglichen.

Das ETH Studio Davos wurde im Sommer 2022 gegründet und bietet Masterstudierenden der ETH die Möglichkeit, mit viel Ideenreichtum Lösungen für Unternehmen im Bereich der Digitalisierung zu erarbeiten. Die Partner des ETH Studio Davos sind das CERC/SLF, Davos BioSciences, Lab42, das Schweizerische Institut für Allergie- und Asthmaforschung SIAF und PMOD/WRC. Einer der Ersten, welcher die Chance einer Projektarbeit im Rahmen des ETH Studio Davos wahrnimmt, ist Luka Skolc aus Ljubljana, Slowenien.

The Davos Course is taking place for the fortieth time this year. From April 15 to 20, 2023, two hundred and sixty aspiring surgeons will practice surgical techniques on organs in the abdominal cavity under the guidance of seventy medical specialists at the “Davos Course” at the Davos Congress Center. The spectrum of practice ranges from making a correct surgical knot to performing a gallbladder removal using minimally invasive (keyhole) surgery.

Im Kältelabor des WSL-Instituts für Schnee und Lawinenforschung SLF untersucht er Eigenschaften von Schnee in einem Windkanal. Seine Ergebnisse zeigen beispielsweise, unter welchen Windbedingungen sich Wechten an Berggraten aufbauen und wie sich gefährliche Schwachschichten bilden können.

Since 2020, the University of Applied Sciences of the Grisons (FHGR) has been training bachelor students to become engineers in the “Mobile Robotics” study program. Director of Studies Christian Bermes has been involved from the beginning and is enthusiastic that the first class will graduate in late summer 2023. Bermes’ projects also include the ongoing development of the boarAI prototype – a ground robot for search and rescue missions.

For intelligence to be artificially replicated and used for practical applications, completely new approaches are needed. Lab42 therefore relaunched a global competition last fall: the ARC Challenge, which was first launched by AI pioneer François Chollet back in 2019. ARC tests basic logical principles of reasoning, quantifying an important part of human-like intelligence.

For his master’s thesis at the University of Zurich, wildlife biologist Sven Buchmann studied how environmental and climate factors affect the distribution and abundance of alpine marmots in the Swiss National Park.

Manal Bel imam has been researching eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE) at the Swiss Institute of Allergy and Asthma Research SIAF since 2020 for her doctoral thesis. EoE is a chronic inflammatory disease that affects the esophagus.

In February 2020, the “Solar Orbiter” space probe was launched from Kennedy Space Center/USA in the direction of the sun. The Solar Orbiter mission is intended to answer questions about the solar wind, the solar poles, the solar magnetic fields, and space weather. On board the European Space Agency (ESA) satellite are ten instruments that have been tested in advance specifically for conditions in space. Two of them were developed with contributions from the Physikalisch-Meteorologisches Observatorium Davos.

The diversity of research carried out in Graubünden was the focus of the two-day "conference Graubünden forscht" at the Davos Congress Center. The most important aim of "Graubünden forscht" was to boost the exchange between the different research disciplines. Based on the audience vote and a prior expert evaluation, the best presentations in the different disciplines were determined. Seven researchers were awarded prize money of five hundred Swiss francs each.

Simonne Bosiers and Onna Rageth, scientists at the University of Applied Sciences of the Grisons, have developed the smartphone app “Augmented Swiss Heritage” together with the company afca. ag, using technically sophisticated spatial anchors. The app has been online since this summer and makes Davos points of interest from the fields of art, culture, health and sport come alive by supporting their viewing with digital elements.

The Christine Kühne - Center for Allergy Research and Education (CK-CARE), based in Davos launched the “ProRaD” study in 2016. One of the aims of the study is to better understand the mechanisms that influence the course of atopic dermatitis and its relationships with other diseases.

Daphne van der Heide, a native of the Netherlands, has been conducting research at the AO Research Institute since September 2020 for a major EU project aimed at developing a new bone substitute material.

High blood pressure, nausea, vomiting, water retention: If these symptoms occur during pregnancy, perhaps preeclampsia could be behind it. In Switzerland, the condition affects about two percent of all pregnant women. The CSEM Center Landquart and the Empa spin-off MOMM Diagnostics, which was founded in 2018, are researching a point-of-care test for the early detection of pre-eclampsia.

Schon seit mehr als 20 Jahren existiert das von der Weltmeteorologischen Organisation (WMO)  in Auftrag gegebene Trübungsmessnetz. Verantwortlich dafür ist ein kleines Team von Wissenschaftlern und Technikern am Physikalisch-Meteorologischen Observatorium Davos.

Circulatory disorders of the coronary arteries are the most common cause of death worldwide. If heart attacks occur in a family over generations, the offspring are also more likely to suffer a heart attack. But what role do genes play in this? If we can discover genes that are in part responsible for a heart attack, it may be possible to develop new treatments based on this knowledge.

The aim of the research project with students of the UAS Grisons is to expand the state of the art in alpine rescue. The use of technologies from the field of robotics should simplify rescue operations and increase the rescue spectrum. For the pre-development, the students received a construction kit with propeller, battery, motor and electronic board for testing control algorithms, which will later be used in a real system.

Karin Fieten vom Niederländischen Asthmazentrum Davos (NAD) und SIAF hat in enger Zusammenarbeit mit den Davoser Instituten CK-CARE (Claudia Traidl-Hofmann), NAD (Lous Rijssenbeek-Nouwens) und SIAF (Cezmi A. Akdis) die Wirksamkeit von Höhenklimatherapie wissenschaftlich untersucht.

T cells circulating in the blood play an important role for the human immune system. They specialize into different types of T helper cells (Th cells) when activated by antigens. Th cells help our body fight off bacteria and viruses. But they also play a central role in diseases such as allergies.

"With CERC, we are expanding the SLF’s research spectrum without starting from scratch. Our ambition is that CERC will quickly be perceived as a center of excellence for alpine natural hazards and the alpine environment."

Researchers from SLF and WSL have analyzed data from more than 200 landslides with the aim of identifying large-scale landslide-prone slopes, implementing measures to improve forest structure in the long term, and thus reducing susceptibility to landslides.
