Die Macht der Bilder oder - Eine Metapher kommt selten allein

Theologische Hochschule Chur

Inaugural lecture by Prof Dr Markus Lau

Exegetical observations on group-related metaphor networks in New Testament texts

Temple, house, boat, family or even planting are just some of the New Testament linguistic images that serve to metaphorically characterise the early Jesus communities. These images are by no means chosen at random. They serve argumentative purposes and are generally highly persuasive in the context of ancient everyday culture. They are powerful images that tend to produce metaphor networks. For anyone who understands a community as a family or a house is also quick to speak of a community father as the head of the household and his children, to name just one example. Such congregational metaphors have a certain seductive power - all the more so because the reception of such metaphors sometimes leads people to forget that they are actually linguistic images. The inaugural lecture examines such metaphor networks in New Testament texts and also explores the potential of the Lucan congregational metaphor of the way, which has only recently been increasingly used in the history of reception.
