The Physical Meteorological Observatory has been researching the influence of solar radiation on the Earth's climate since 1907. To this purpose, it develops instruments for use in space and on the ground.

In 1971, the World Meteorological Organization added the mission as World Radiation Center (WRC). The WRC has the task of operating reference measuring instruments on which all meteorological radiation measurements worldwide are based. Solar radiation measurements in all wavelength ranges (UV to IR) are amongthe main activities of the institute. The collaboration with ETH Zurich through the concurrent professorship of the director of PMOD/WRC at the ETH Zurich Physics Department has been very successful.
