The Graubünden Cantonal Hospital (KSGR) is the regional hospital for southeastern Switzerland and the largest hospital in the canton of Graubünden. As a teaching hospital affiliated with the University of Zurich and a recognized FMH training center with several A-level clinics, the KSGR offers a comprehensive range of medical and surgical services. The KSGR is organized into departments and has been conducting cross-disciplinary and interprofessional clinical research for decades. It is also one of eight Phase 1 centers within the Swiss Cancer Institute network.

The Clinical Trial Unit (CTU) KSGR

To address the increasing complexity of clinical research, enhance efficiency, and optimally pool resources, research activities were consolidated into a central Clinical Trial Unit (CTU) in 2024.

The CTU KSGR serves as a central center of excellence and professional service provider for academic and industry-initiated clinical trials at the Cantonal Hospital. By bringing together specialized staff—including certified study coordinators (study nurses/CRCs), data managers, and principal investigators—the unit ensures seamless support in accordance with the highest quality standards.

Broad Scope and Highest Quality Standards

The CTU’s range of services includes professional support for Phase 1 through 4 clinical trials across the hospital’s diverse medical departments. A particular

Organizational Structure of the CTU

The CTU KSGR is organizationally anchored within the hospital’s Tumor and Research Center and is based on a clear, three-part structure that combines scientific excellence with operational efficiency:

  • Strategic Board: Responsible for long-term planning, the strategic direction of clinical research in Graubünden, and the prioritization of quality assurance measures, certifications, and strategic collaborations. Chair: Prof. Dr. med. Roger von Moos

  • Scientific Board: Composed of active researchers from the KSGR. It evaluates submitted study projects for their scientific merit, design, and medical and logistical feasibility. Chair: PD Dr. med. Michael Mark

  • Operations (Operational Management & Core Unit): Responsible for the practical implementation and the full range of services in day-to-day study operations. This includes study consulting, project and quality management, the administrative handling of regulatory affairs (submissions to ethics committees and Swissmedic), monitoring, as well as direct study coordination and on-site data management. Head: Gabriela Manetsch

The KSGR works closely with academic institutions, partners from the pharmaceutical and medical technology industries, and leading national and international research groups on various studies. In addition to the Swiss Cancer Institute, these include renowned global organizations such as the EORTC (European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer), the IBCSG (International Breast Cancer Study Group), the ABCSG (Austrian Breast & Colorectal Cancer Study Group), and the NSABP (National Surgical Adjuvant Breast and Bowel Project).
