GRAUBÜNDEN AND THE SECOND WORLD WAR

Everyday life in a state of emergency

Graubünden, like other border cantons in Switzerland, has its own history at the time of the Second World War. The region was particularly affected by border security and the arrival of refugees. But other topics such as the cultivation battle, national censorship or the challenges of dealing with espionage, alleged or actual Nazis or Nazi sympathisers are also the subject of this fundamental study. The author sheds light on issues within the Grisons, the perception of the war among the population and the knowledge or lack of knowledge about the Holocaust. Twenty years after the Bergier Report, Graubünden has thus received an exemplary reappraisal of a unique period in the canton's history.

Christian Ruch, Dr phil., is a historian and sociologist and lives in Chur. He was a member of the "Independent Commission of Experts Switzerland - Second World War" (Bergier Commission) and is now a freelance researcher and publicist. The book was published by the Institute for Cultural Research Graubünden.
