The skill of writing an article – and getting it published in a peer reviewed journal – is highly prized, but rarely taught. This one-day course concentrates on this skill, and in particular on the process of writing. Participants should come with an idea for an article, and during the day they will work this up in easy stages.

By the end of the session participants will…

• understand the publications game – and how to be a winner;

• make logical and informed decisions on where to send articles;

• reduce rewriting in the final stages by early planning;

• cut ‘information overload’ by using simple brainstorming techniques;

• make the most of scarce time by writing for 10 minutes a day;

• use ‘evidence based’ writing to solve disputes with others;

• apply simple marketing techniques to increase the chances of a submitted article being looked at favourably.

Who should – and should not – attend

This course is suitable for anyone who wants to look at how they write journal articles, and who is ready to start writing one.

This course is not suitable for those who have yet to decide on what to write about, who want a course in critical appraisal or ‘scientific English’, or who are on the whole satisfied with the way they write.

Writing a journal article: program

9.00 Introduction: tutor, participants – and the problems involved in writing and getting published.

10.15 Coffee break

10.30 Understand the publications game: introduction, applying a helpful model used by professional writers.

11.15 Understand the player: writing personal action plans which ensure that participants will start to write.

12.00 Set the brief: ensuring clarity of thought by carefully thinking through five preliminary questions.

12.45 Lunch break

13.45 Organise the information: controlling the mass of information by using the latest brain-storming techniques.

14.30 Write a plan (or four): understanding the requirements for each of the four main sections of the scientific article, and constructing a plan for each.

15.15 Coffee break

15.30 Write the article: reducing writer’s block, saving time and maximising creativity.

16.00 The final stages: rewriting, adding the extras, using internal reviewers, send off the package.

17.00 End of course.
