Ethics in scientific research - An introductory case-based course

This case-based, interactive course aims to train PhD students and postdoc researchers in developing the knowledge, skills and attitudes that are needed to conduct scientific research in accordance with ethical principles. Participants are assisted in developing expertise in this area by drawing on the resources of ethical theory and relevant ethical guidelines.

Course objective and goal

The overall goal of the course is to introduce participants to basic notions of ethics and to ethics in scientific research. This will be achieved through lectures and discussions on real and fictitious cases of scientific misconduct, along with the examination of current ethical guidelines.

Course program

The seminar is structured in two sessions. The morning session consists of a series of lectures and case discussions with the aim of introducing students to general notions of ethics and scientific integrity. During the afternoon session, participants can give brief presentations on various cases of scientific misconduct and engage in discussions about the ethically relevant aspects of each case.

Course preparation

Participants are required to select in advance a case of scientific misconduct and to briefly present that case during the course. To that purpose, they will be assisted by the Trainer with relevant bibliography.

About the lecturer

Dr. Roberto Andorno is Privatdozent of bioethics and biomedical law at the Faculty of Law of the University of Zurich, and Lecturer in ethics and bioethics at the University of Basel. He is also Senior Research Fellow at the Institute of Biomedical Ethics of the University of Zurich, where he also coordinates the PhD Program in biomedical ethics and law.

Besides his expertise in bioethical issues, he has specialized over the years in the teaching of scientific integrity to doctoral students in Switzerland (Graduate Campus, University of Zurich) and abroad.

Dr. Andorno graduated in Law at the University of Rosario (Argentina) and completed two doctoral degrees at the Universities of Buenos Aires and Paris-Est, both on topics related to bioethics. From 1998 to 2005 he served as a member of the International Bioethics Committee (IBC) of UNESCO as representative of Argentina. He has published extensively on issues relating to bioethics and human rights, and notably Bioética y dignidad de la persona (Madrid, 2012) and Principles of international biolaw (Brussels, 2013).
