The SLF is an internationally active research and service center. Around 180 employees conduct research into snow, its interactions with the atmosphere, the formation and dynamics of avalanches and other mass movements, avalanche protection, permafrost, snow hydrology, and mountain ecosystems. The SLF offers services such as consulting on avalanche protection measures, expert reports on avalanche accidents, the development of warning systems for natural hazards, and the web portal and avalanche prevention app “White Risk.” Its best-known product is the avalanche bulletin. The public can learn more about the SLF during tours of the institute.

The CERC research center develops practical solutions to socially relevant problems facing mountain regions as a result of climate change, extreme events, and natural hazards. As a hub for research, knowledge, and implementation, the CERC combines cutting-edge international research with regional knowledge to ensure that mountain regions remain safe and valuable habitats in the future. The CERC research center is part of the WSL Institute for Snow and Avalanche Research SLF in Davos. It is funded by the Canton of Graubünden and the Swiss Federal Institute for Forest, Snow and Landscape Research WSL and supported by ETH Zurich through two joint professorships.
