The Physical Meteorological Observatory and World Radiation Center (PMOD/WRC) has been researching the influence of solar radiation on the Earth's climate since 1907. For this purpose, it develops instruments for use in space and on the ground.

In 1971, the World Meteorological Organization added the mission as World Radiation Center (WRC). The WRC has the task of operating reference measuring instruments on which all meteorological radiation measurements worldwide are based. Radiation measurements of the sun in all wavelength ranges (UV to IR) are among the main activities of the institute.
