The Kirchner Museum Davos preserves and presents the work of the German Expressionist painter Ernst Ludwig Kirchner (1880 – 1938), who lived and worked in Davos from 1918 to 1938. The collection includes paintings, sculptures, drawings, prints, and textile works. Almost all the artist’s sketchbooks and photographs, together with numerous documents, complement the collection. Taken together, these holdings offer rich insight into Kirchner’s working methods, imagery, and life in Davos. The museum’s library on Expressionism (accessible to researchers on request) provides further access to the art-historical context.
The collection serves as a foundation for scholarly research into Kirchner’s work and its time. The museum documents and makes its holdings accessible, opening sources for research. This includes the complete digitization of the sketchbooks. Provenance research is another key area: it investigates the history of ownership and helps document how works came into the collection. This research brings new perspectives to the artworks and the paths they have taken through history.
Exhibitions and publications share research findings with a broad public. They explore different aspects of Kirchner’s practice—from his photography to his engagement with the Alpine landscape—and place his work in historical and contemporary contexts. Tours, workshops, and other learning programmes invite visitors to explore these subjects further. The Kirchner Museum Davos is therefore a place for exhibitions and research, as well as a forum for exchange about art and culture.
