On the first Tuesday of the month at 18:30, scientists and anyone with a thirst for knowledge meet at the “Researchers Beer” in the foyer of the Kulturplatz Davos to socialize and exchange ideas.
PD Dr. Milena Sokolowska is a rising star in the field of immunology and translational medicine. She is an internationally recognized scientist, a specialist in internal medicine, and has been leading the Immunometabolism Research Group at the Swiss Institute of Allergy and Asthma Research (SIAF), University of Zurich, since 2018.
She studied medicine at the Medical University of Lodz (Poland) and obtained a doctorate in medicine and immunology. Her scientific career has taken her to the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in Bethesda, USA, as well as to SIAF, where she conducts research at the intersection of immunology, pulmonology, and allergology. Since 2022, she has also been a Privatdozent (senior lecturer) at the University of Zurich. Additionally, she has a limited clinical role at the University Hospital Zurich (USZ).
Her research focuses on the role of immunometabolism, respiratory viruses, and the microbiome in immune processes and the development of allergic, pulmonary, and autoimmune diseases. She is the author and co-author of over 110 scientific publications in renowned international journals, as well as several specialized books in the fields of allergology, immunology, and molecular biology. She collaborates with numerous researchers worldwide, as she firmly believes that science is a team effort.
For her outstanding scientific achievements, she has received numerous awards, including the prestigious PhARF Award, which was ceremoniously presented to her in Uppsala by the Queen of Sweden. She is listed in the Stanford/Elsevier ranking of the top 2% most-cited scientists worldwide and was named among the top 1% most-cited researchers globally by Clarivate in 2024.
For the past ten years, she has lived with her family in Davos, enjoying life in the mountains as well as the openness and sense of community of the local population.
On April 1, 2025, at 6:30 PM, PD Dr. Milena Sokolowska will be a guest at Researchers Beer in Davos, invited by Barbara Haller Rupf (Academia Raetica). She will discuss her current research and provide insights into the life of a scientist balancing conferences, patient care, laboratory work, and academic teaching. Afterward, the Kulturplatz Davos will screen the film "Der Eismann", which tells the story of polar researcher Konrad Steffen, who disappeared in the polar ice in 2020.
