Researchers Beer - Casual conversations about research for all

Academia Raetica, University of Applied Sciences of the Grisons

Location: Kulturplatz Davos, Promenade 58c, Davos Platz
Start: 6:30 p.m.

At the “Researchers Beer” in the foyer of the Kulturplatz Davos, scientists and citizens with a thirst for knowledge meet at 6:30 pm on the first Tuesday of the month to exchange ideas and get to know each other.

Special guest: On September 3, Academia Raetica welcomes Christian Bermes to the Researchers Beer at Kulturplatz Davos. Christian Bermes studied engineering in Hamburg, Stuttgart, and at the Georgia Institute of Technology, earning a diploma in Technical Cybernetics and a Master of Science in Engineering Science and Mechanics. His PhD at ETH Zurich (2010) focused on developing a microdrone as part of an EU research project.

After research stays and industry work, including at Alstom Power AG and Bosch, he became a Professor of Automation and Mechatronics at the University of Applied Sciences Rapperswil in 2014. There, his team developed drones and robots for search and rescue missions, winning several medals at CYBATHLON competitions.

Since 2020, Bermes has led the Mobile Robotics program at FH Graubünden, where he and his team at the Mobile Robotics Lab develop innovative robots.

At the Researchers Beer, he will present two current projects. The first focuses on hazard detection using uncrewed systems. FH Graubünden has developed a system combining the birdAI drone and the boarAI crawler, which work together to detect toxic or radioactive substances in the air and on the ground, creating a hazard map of the explored areas.

The second project involves a flipping drone for narrow openings. Developed by Marco Ruggia, this drone can flip 180 degrees to reduce its size and fly through tight spaces, such as collapsed buildings.

The event will be held in English.
