Prof. Dr. Hanspeter Schmitt

Professor Hanspeter Schmitt heads the Chair of Theological Ethics at the Theologische Hochschule Chur. He completed his studies in philosophy and theology at the Catholic Theological Faculty of the Otto Friedrich University of Bamberg, graduating in 1986 with a theological diploma. Following his training at the Pastoral Seminar of the Philosophical-Theological University in Münster and his ordination as a priest in 1988, he spent many years engaged in youth, vocational, clinical, and parish pastoral care, as well as in religious education.

Additionally, he worked from 1994 to 2005 at the Chair of Moral Theology at the University of Bamberg, where he also served as acting head until 2007. He earned his doctorate there in 2001 in moral theology with his dissertation "Empathy and Value Communication: Theory of Empathy from a Theological-Ethical Perspective," published in 2003 by Herder (Freiburg i. Br.). In 2007, he qualified as a professor in theological ethics at the University of Bamberg with his habilitation thesis: "Sociality and Conscience" (LIT-Verlag Münster 2008).

Since the winter semester of 2007/08, Hanspeter Schmitt has been a professor at the Chair of Theological Ethics at the Theologische Hochschule. In addition to his teaching and research activities, he holds various positions at the college, including being a member of the Rector's Council, the officer for evaluation and quality assurance, and for equality and inclusion. He is also a member of various commissions and advisory boards, including the International Association for Moral Theology and Social Ethics and the Ethics Commission for Research and Development in the canton of Graubünden.
