Women scientists continue to face greater barriers to success than their male counterparts. Empirical evidence from economics demonstrates that the underrepresentation of female researchers has important consequences for society.

The best avalanche forecasts are worth little if users are unable to understand and apply the provided information in their risk management practices. Avalanche safety research has traditionally focused mainly on improving the accuracy of avalanche forecasts and did not pay much attention to how the information is interpreted and applied.

Soils play a central role in the functioning of our ecosystems and the well-being of humankind. Soils are not only the basis for the production of food and other raw materials, but also fulfil functions such as water storage and filtration, nutrient cycling, carbon storage and are the habitat for an overwhelming biological diversity.

As in all mountain ranges around the world, snow, glaciers and permafrost in the European Alps are undergoing major changes in connection with current global change.

The Summer School „Forests and Extremes: Crisis or Transition?” (August 18-25, 2024, Davos) wants to face up to the complexity of compound and cascading events. Alongside national and international experts from multiple disciplines, participants will expose themselves to the unknown: the future of terrestrial ecosystems with a focus on forests!

The WSL Biodiversity Center and the Blue-Green Biodiversity Research Initiative are pleased to announce their upcoming second “Summer school: Blue-green biodiversity. Research and practice and the interface of aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems” to provide an in-depth understanding of the linkages between aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems and the interdependencies between social and ecological systems.
