The DRG was founded in 1904. It is an important research and documentation center for the Rhaeto-Romanic language and Alpine culture. The institute is supported by the Societad Retorumantscha.

At the Institut dal DRG the National Dictionary of Romansh is compiled. The DRG considers all Rhaeto-Roman idioms and dialects of Graubünden as well as their historical expressions (as of 2020: 14 volumes with the word series A-MINDRAMAINTA).

The dictionary is also accessible online. The Institut dal DRG also has an extensive photo library, which can also be consulted online.
