Conserving and restoring Earth’s natural ecosystems is an essential component in the fight against climate change and biodiversity loss. Our research addresses the role of terrestrial ecosystems in governing the global carbon cycle, and how the restoration of degraded lands can contribute to terrestrial carbon sequestration. In particular, soils are a critical component of terrestrial ecosystems, harboring the largest proportion of terrestrial carbon and biodiversity.

By mediating the fluxes of carbon to and from the soil, the global soil microbiome governs the extent of carbon sequestration across terrestrial ecosystems. This talk focuses on how functional variation in microbial communities can drive striking differences in terrestrial carbon cycling that can place fundamental constraints on the carbon sequestration potential across landscapes. We then explore how we can generate a predictive understanding of this functional variation in soil microbial communities to inform land management efforts that aim to preserve terrestrial biodiversity and carbon storage.
