In the diverse mountain landscape around the Piz Sardona., that lies partly in the cantons of Grisons, St. Gallen, and Glarus, mountain formation processes can be observed in a vivid and unique way. The area covers 330 km2 and has a great educational and scientific value, as it is an outstanding witness to the understanding of mountain formation processes and plate tectonics. It is a key site for the research of geological sciences since the 18th century.
