The DRG was founded in 1904. It is an important research and documentation center for the Rhaeto-Romanic language and Alpine culture. The institute is supported by the Societad Retorumantscha.

At the Institut dal DRG the National Dictionary of Romansh is compiled. The DRG takes into account all Rhaeto-Romance idioms and dialects of Graubünden as well as their historical expressions (as of 2020: 14 volumes with the word series A-MINDRAMAINTA).

The dictionary is also accessible online. The Institut dal DRG also has an extensive photo library, which can also be consulted online.
